The most colorful time of the year to visit
Updated: June 2, 2026
One of the best times of the year to come to the Pikes Peak Region is in the fall.
This is top-secret intel, so don’t tell anyone (wink). We call it “Colorful Colorado” for a reason! If you’re eager to catch the fall colors, a temperate climate and fewer crowds, this is the itinerary for you.
Stay somewhere you can be one with nature and among the changing leaves! Pikes Peak Ranch is a fantastic choice. Located in Woodland Park (just west of Colorado Springs), the ranch has cabins that can accommodate anywhere from 2-12 guests. The views are incredible year-round, but this property shines in the fall with the surrounding aspen trees. You can also consider Eagle Fire Lodge & Cabins – also in Woodland Park – or The Outlook Lodge in Green Mountain Falls.

In autumn, there are often patios still open with cool breezes and warm sunshine. Some places to/from leaf peeping that are worth the stop include Don Juan's at Chamonix in Cripple Creek and the Wines of Colorado in Cascade. Other favorite spots are Ivywild School in Southwest COS, Tapateria in Old Colorado City and Crystal Park Cantina in Manitou Springs.

AM: Horseback riding with Old Stage Riding Stables
PM: Ivywild School
One of the most beautiful ways to enjoy the colorful fall views is on horseback. Old Stage Riding Stables will take you through trails where you can leaf peep and spot animals like mule deer and birds. All experience levels are welcome! Dine at the on-site Stage Stop Cantina, open seasonally with limited hours, so call ahead.
AM: Hike in North Cheyenne Cañon Park
PM: Explore Old Colorado City
PM: Tour the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College
Leaf peepers, rejoice! ‘Tis the season for gorgeous fall hikes. Check out Seven Bridges Trail in North Cheyenne Cañon Park. Great in any weather, Seven Bridges is especially stunning with the changing leaves, bridges and creek crossings. Here’s a suggestion not many know about: if you keep hiking past the seventh bridge, you’ll soon reach a beautiful aspen tree grove that is magical in the fall!
After your hike, explore Old Colorado City (OCC). In this season, the trees lining the historic shopping district are stunning. Enjoy boutiques, art galleries and great dining options. Check out the OCC events page, as there are many in the fall you don’t want to miss.
Complete your afternoon and celebrate Arts Month (if its October), at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College. Founded in 1936, this museum features permanent and rotating collections, plus year-round events and theater productions. Galleries include contemporary cultures of the Southwest and the Americas, Native American works and Hispanic and Spanish Colonial art.
AM: Hike in Mueller State Park
PM: Green Mountain Falls Skyspace by James Turrell
PM: Wines of Colorado
Day 3 begins with a hike in Mueller State Park, located in Divide. The park includes both conifer and aspen forests, making for a striking contrast with the leaves changing from green to yellow and red. With 44 miles of trails, there are many options to consider so plan ahead!
Afterward, stop in nearby Green Mountain Falls to see the Green Mountain Falls Skyspace by James Turrell. Built into the landscape of the town, this immersive art experience involves a short hike and new perspective of the sky above.
Cap it off with a wine tasting and dinner at the Wines of Colorado. For brisk nights, cozy up along the firepits as you enjoy creekside dining.
AM: Visit Fall Mountain Farm
PM: Go to 3 Hundred Days of Shine Distilling
Nothing screams fall more than a pumpkin patch outing. The Pikes Peak Region has plenty, so check out the options. Fall Mountain Farm is a great choice, located just north of Colorado Springs in the Tri-Lakes area. Here you can pick your own pumpkins fresh from the vine, go on a hayride, navigate a maze and meet the cute farm animals.
When you’re done, walk around Downtown Monument and grab a seasonal beverage at 3 Hundred Days of Shine Distilling – a Veteran-owned and operated moonshine distillery. It’ll warm you up on chilly days!
