Campgrounds: For the outdoors (wo)man who likes to have a designated camping area and limited amenities such as bathhouses and built-in hookups and fire pits.
Dispersed Camping: For the adventurer who truly wants to "rough it."
Here, you can set up camp anywhere in the National Forest OUTSIDE of a designated campground. Dispersed camping means no services; such as trash removal, and little or no facilities are provided. Be prepared for this type of camping with these rules and tips. With more adventure comes more responsibility. For those looking for a more rugged trip, the vast Pike National Forest offers dispersed camping almost anywhere within its leafy borders. Set up camp and seek out adventure on popular trails such as The Crags or Horsethief Falls. Wind up the mountain on the rustic Old Stage Road, a dirt road that features roadside and meadow camping just past the first several miles.
Enjoy a variety of red rock formations alongside 600 acres of pinon and sage, and red rock formations to explore. While camping is free, you must set up in the designated campground. There are a few pavilions and picnic tables as well as fire pits on site.
West of Canon City, this is a popular high-use area for motorized recreation users. Campers will soak in stunning views of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range and find a mix of juniper, scrub and pinon pine trees. Keep your eyes peeled for elk, deer and bighorn sheep.
This winding road on the way to Woodland Park features beautiful wildflowers, meadows and overlooks where you can get amazing views of Pikes Peak. Find plenty of campsites on this and the many side roads, as well as the Rainbow Falls area near the Douglas County line.
