Visit Colorado Springs Launches into Recovery

VCOS enacts phased recovery strategy as businesses, campgrounds begin to reopen

Colorado Springs, Colo. – May 14, 2020 – In an effort to keep travel to the region top of mind for visitors, VCOS is rolling out a phased recovery strategy. The current phase is all about planning and keeping the Pikes Peak region at the forefront for visitors while encouraging support for local businesses.

“Visit Colorado Springs is sharing inspiring, travel-oriented content while adhering to public health guidelines and recommendations to support the health of our community and visitors,” said Alexea Veneracion, Communications Manager of VCOS. “Travel planning is beginning once again, and we’re receiving positive sentiments from the drive market that they are looking forward to experiencing the wonders of our region.”

Visitor Guide orders and usage of the VCOS online trip-planning tool have been increasing over the past few weeks, indicating that people are excited about upcoming visits. The pandemic brings a level of uncertainty when it comes to which businesses can reopen and how quickly they can adapt to the latest restrictions and guidance. The phased recovery plan ensures we are poised and ready to go as guidelines change and restrictions lift. The focus of initial recovery campaigns will be on inviting regional visitors back, followed by the drive market in Colorado, Texas and surrounding states.

“We want to fulfill our promises to the region’s visitors, and those promises include prioritizing both their safety and experiences they can expect in the current atmosphere,” said Doug Price, President & CEO of VCOS. “With the Pikes Peak region serving as a hub of outdoor adventure and activities that allow for social distancing, we are well positioned for recovery.”

Most trails and open spaces have remained open throughout the pandemic, with safety precautions being encouraged. Now other businesses and activities are beginning to reopen with necessary restrictions in place. As of May 13, El Paso County Public health issued a Notice of Determination stating all local campgrounds are permitted to reopen, with several limitations to account for the safety of all campers. VCOS is keeping track of hotels and other businesses reopening on the COVID-19 Updates page.

Activities like driving up Pikes Peak Highway and across the Royal Gorge Bridge allow explorers to soak in the beauty of their surroundings while maintaining safe social distancing. Regional visitors are encouraged to review restrictions and safety recommendations before embarking on these adventures. Restaurants are still currently offering takeout, curbside or delivery only, but they are moving quickly toward reopening on-site dining and taking steps to do so safely.

“Our industry is both eager to reopen and committed to doing so in a way that is beneficial for all parties,” said Price. “Phased recovery allows us to prioritize what’s best for businesses and staff, as well as residents and visitors. We’re doing all we can to make sure that when visitors start coming back, they have the high-quality experiences they expect and deserve from our region.”
