Janet Suthers Olympic City USA Community Service Award
This is a bi-annual award named in honor of the first recipient, Janet Suthers, former First Lady of the City of Colorado Springs from 2015 – 2023, who has become a dedicated and highly regarded public servant for the City of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region.
A champion of the Olympic & Paralympic movement and its values, Janet Suthers led a task force team that was integral to the creation of the Olympic City USA brand, an effort that galvanized residents toward a common identity and bolstered civic pride.
Janet raised over $1 million to fund community outreach, youth sports and brand promotion. Her legacy can be seen throughout the city – from the Olympic City USA I-25 sign, to Olympic & Paralympic street banners, the city logo, the UCCS “Olympians Among Us Sculpture, Olympic City USA Track & Field Days at local elementary schools and the thousands of Colorado Springs children enjoying free youth sports throughout the city. Janet’s efforts have left a lasting impact throughout Colorado Springs and represent the very best of community service.
Qualifications for this Award:
The 2024 award will be presented to a member of the Colorado Springs community residing in the Pikes Peak Region (El Paso County) who personifies the Olympic City USA brand in their work and deeds throughout the region, enhancing and promoting the city’s strong reputation as a viable place to live, work and play.
The award recipient’s engagement in the community should also reflect the Olympic and Paralympic Values of Excellence, Friendship, Respect, Courage, Determination, Inspiration and Equality.
This person should also have Community Service experience (volunteerism) and be an active advocate for positive change and inclusivity.
The 2024 Janet Suthers Olympic City USA Community Service Award will be presented at the Visit Colorado Springs 2024 Tourism Awards Celebration on September 12, 2023.
