Event Summary
Sallie Knox Hall - Spirit. Animal.
Encountering an animal or natural element and feeling a deep connection to a deceased loved one's spirit can be a profound experience. Many cultures and belief systems hold the idea that animals can serve as vessels for the souls of those who have passed on. For instance, the presence of a cardinal as a messenger from the spirit world is most often the first thing that comes to mind. Its appearance, for many people, feels like a gentle reminder that one is being watched over or comforted by the deceased.

Susan Quinn Horsfall is a versatile artist whose work embodies a rich tapestry of stories and experiences. Encouraged by her family from an early age, she pursued a BFA in printmaking from Indiana University, establishing a strong foundation in the visual arts. Her journey continued at Atlanta's Portfolio Center, where she delved into illustration and design, followed by a transformative period at the Art Students League in New York City.
Relocating to Colorado in 2001, she harmonized family life with artistic growth, drawing inspiration from local artists. During her hiatus, she mentally cataloged scenes from daily life, allowing her creativity to simmer quietly, but distinctly.
Now re-emerging with renewed vigor, Horsfall's work is a testament to her rich visual vocabulary, cultivated through years of observation and experience. "I do paint people, but I don't paint portraits. I am a storyteller before anything else," she explains, encapsulating her artistic philosophy.

Unfolding: New Ways of Seeing, New Ways of Being reveals ways of looking at the natural world and uncovers the feelings that arise from what we find. By combining the gentle and serene with the contemporary and bold, the pieces in this collection examine how we encounter nature. Traditional Sumi ink punctuated by bursts of color creates a space to explore the essence of living things through the images they present to us.
