In 1871 Colorado Springs founder William Jackson Palmer built his first residence at Glen Eyrie Castle, a large clapboard house with more than twenty rooms. His landscape architect, John Blair, may have suggested the name Glen Eyrie “Valley of the Eagle’s Nest”, referring to an eagle’s nest near the entrance to the canyon.
General William Jackson Palmer is well known for his railroad empire and the founding of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Less known is his generosity endowing Colorado Springs with many of its city parks and he started Colorado College.
