Tips from a Colorado Springs Elopement Photographer

Traditional weddings aren't for everyone. They can be expensive, complicated and stressful.

It makes sense why more and more couples are choosing to elope instead! Don't just take it from us! We asked Abigail Alexis, a local elopement expert, to answer some big questions you may have about eloping in Colorado Springs: where to go, what to expect and how to know it's right for you! Why should I elope in Colorado Springs specifically?

Colorado Springs is a fantastic place to elope! The city combines adventure, scenery and fun for an unforgettable elopement experience. As a local, I know a ton of great spots for every part of the elopement: scenic ceremony locations, unforgettable restaurants for romantic meals, dreamy hotels to stay at and all the fun activities you can enjoy in between.

What are some of your favorite spots to recommend to couples?

If you're looking for an intimate place for your wedding or elopement to take place, you've got options. Take advantage of our stunning outdoor spaces by tying the knot at Garden of the Gods Park, the summit of Pikes Peak, Pikes Peak National Forest or Red Rock Canyon Open Space. Hillside Gardens and Gather Mountain Blooms are both beautiful local venue full of flowers. You're not just limited to the outdoors, either: a dive bar like Frisky's or one of our town's many acclaimed breweries would bring a comfy charm to your special day.

You have to celebrate your union with a romantic meal! Trust me, I know some spots. Grand View at Garden of the Gods Resort offers unbelievable red rock views and upscale bites. Four by Brother Luck is run by one of Colorado Springs' most acclaimed chefs and takes deep inspiration from our region's landscape using local ingredients. Sushi Row is a great spot for cool Downtown vibes and modern Japanese flavors.

As for romantic places to stay, there are plenty. Outdoorsy couples will love the boutique hotel Kinship Landing. With its convenient Downtown location, acclaimed onsite restaurant and rustic, yet polished feel, it's a great rest stop for a couple of adventurers! The Mining Exchange is another Downtown staple with several great dining options and an elegant, historic feel. The Broadmoor has been one of the city's premier properties for over a century. You and your special person can traverse the properties acres of land and indulge in their luxurious restaurants and amenities.

When the ceremony ends, the fun really begins! When you elope in Colorado Springs, you're in the perfect place to fill your elopement with exciting, unique activities! Some of my favorites I recommend include:

Let someone else take the drivers seat! When you embark on a Jeep tour with Great Outdoors Adventures, you get a knowledgable tour guide taking you to some of the region's most iconic natural wonders.
What's more romantic than views of Colorado Springs from over 14,000 feet? Taking a shuttle to the top of Pikes Peak is one of the easiest ways to experience America's Mountain and the Pikes Peak Highway.
Riding a hot air balloon is an activity on many people's bucket lists. Make it even more memorable by taking a ride with your beau to watch the sunrise! Adventures Out West even provides private two-person flights if you just want to take in the views with your special person.
You may have already seen the beauty of Garden of the Gods Park, but experiencing it on horseback is horseback riding through the park with Academy Riding Stables feels straight out of a fairy tale.
Spend a day on the water! Paddle boarding on Quail Lake is a fun way to keep cool and enjoy a beautiful Colorado day. You can rent equipment from Dragonfly Paddle Yoga, or even take a yoga class on standup paddle boards!
Find some live music and dance the night away! Colorado Springs is home to many great local musicians. Sara Van Hecke is a personal favorite, and you can find her at venues around town, like the OCC Farmers Market, Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort and Lumen8 Rooftop Social!

The ceremony can be as simple or elaborate as you wish, tailored to your preferences without the pressure of a large audience. Ultimately, eloping offers a relaxed, heartfelt celebration that truly reflects your relationship and values. You can include elopement day activities like writing your vows together, reading letters from loved ones, hiking a 14er, horseback riding, camping, and stargazing.

Many believe that eloping means sacrificing a beautiful and meaningful ceremony, but in reality, elopements can be incredibly personal and stunningly scenic. Another misconception is that eloping is a last-minute or hasty decision; however, many couples plan their elopements meticulously, incorporating special touches and personalized elements. Finally, some think that eloping is a way to avoid celebrating with loved ones, but couples can still involve friends and family through live streaming or by hosting a post-elopement celebration.

What are some signs that eloping is the right choice for me?

I often find that eloping is the right choice for couples who prioritize intimacy and simplicity over elaborate celebrations. If the idea of a large, traditional wedding feels overwhelming and you prefer a more personal, meaningful ceremony, eloping might be perfect for you. Additionally, if you envision a unique setting, like a scenic mountain or on a cliff overlooking the beach, and value spontaneous, heartfelt moments, eloping aligns perfectly with these desires. Ultimately, eloping allows you to focus solely on your love and connection.
