Event Summary
Nico Wilkinson Presents: The Weeds Grow Anyway – Book Release Show
Colorado Springs poet Nico Wilkinson takes the stage to launch their long-awaited debut poetry collection, The Weeds Grow Anyway, at a one-night-only release show at the Marie Walshe Sharpe Gallery of Contemporary Art (GOCA) at UCCS.
Known for their viral poem “trans day of i love you,” Wilkinson brings the same fierce tenderness and lyrical power to their new collection—a meditation on queerness, survival, and the radical act of growing in hostile environments. The evening will feature live readings, reflections from the poet, and an opportunity to pick up preordered copies of the book.
Each copy of The Weeds Grow Anyway is hand-bound and features a linocut printed cover, making every book a tactile experience of art and poetry. Rooted in both the physical and emotional landscapes of Colorado Springs, the collection explores what it means to thrive in spite of adversity, drawing parallels between the wildness of weeds and the resilience of the trans community.
As Wilkinson puts it, “This book is a meditation on my personal identity and growth, but more than that, it’s about how no one grows alone. It is a love letter to the ecosystem of the queer community that makes this city home."
Celebrate the release of this powerful new voice in contemporary poetry with an evening of words, art, growth, and community.
