Jongo is a traditional Brazilian dance and musical style with strong African roots, especially associated with communities in southeastern Brazil. It combines drumming, singing, and dancing, often performed in a circle. Jongo was historically practiced by enslaved Africans and their descendants and has played an important role in preserving African cultural traditions in Brazil.
Jongo, a form of expression using singing, dancing and drumming, was created by enslaved African men and women. Forced to work on coffee farms in southeastern Brazil, these slaves offered up their injustices to Catholic saints and African deities in hopes of being granted divine protection.
