Event Summary
Green Box Artist in Residence, Liberty Styles, will be presenting an excerpt from Adventures in Success, adapted as a solo work during their residency. Inspired by Herman Melville’s Bartleby the Scrivener, the work brings together tap dance, audio collage, visual projection, drag performance, and live electronic experimentation to explore themes of survival, refusal, and desire.
The presentation will include a talk-back with the audience, and the program will run 40-60 minutes in total.
From Liberty:
“My residency at Green Box comes after a busy summer of collaborative work, and I’m excited to be zeroing back in on my personal process. I’ve arrived with bits and pieces of material—performance vignettes, motifs, and choreographic steps I’ve already tested—and am using this time to develop an extended 10-minute solo work.
I am creating a ‘laboratory’ for tap dancing, electronic sound creation, and the manipulation of percussive dance sound through digital interfaces. With live electronic looping at the core, I’ll splice together theatrical moments and create a soundtrack for my performance. Drawing from my collection of audio soundbites, choreography snippets, and character motifs, I’ll test these materials in a live audio collage-making process and begin to craft a larger storyline. I look forward to inviting Green Box’s surrounding community into this space to witness a live iteration of the process.”
