This annual festivity commemorates the historic Battle of Puebla, marking Mexico's triumph over the French army. Despite being outnumbered and underequipped, the Mexican forces emerged victorious on May 5, 1862. Shortly after, President Benito Juárez declared this date a national holiday.
Much like other holidays integrated into the cultural fabric of the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a widespread celebration beyond its origins. Today, it honors Mexican heritage while also recalling the pivotal battle over 160 years ago.
