Event Summary
The historical presentation will focus on supercharged aircraft during WWII, and the importance of the technology which is featured in automobiles and some civilian aircraft today. The presentations are hosted in aircraft hangars at the museum, and there is no extra charge for the presentation. Normal admission fees apply.
The engine of an aircraft loses power as it climbs due to a decrease in atmospheric pressure. At 10,000 feet its engine generates only two thirds of its sea-level power. Two technologies -- the multi-stage, multi-speed supercharger and the turbosupercharger -- transformed the engine and the airplane. All the top WWII fighters, such as the P-38 Lightning and the P-51 Mustang, either had an advanced gear-driven supercharger or an exhaust-driven turbo-supercharger.
On Saturday, October 18, at 9:00 am, Lead Docent and aerospace engineer Les Doggrell will present the story of the development and use of superchargers and turbosuperchargers and how they greatly improved the performance of some of the most famous and effective U.S. aircraft of WWII. After the presentation, the P-38 Lightning will be tugged out of the hangar in which the presentation is staged, started up, and then flown for visitors, weather permitting.
For this final scheduled flight of the year, combat veteran P-38 "White 33" will fly.
