Event Summary
Grand Prize winner of the 2025 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the Katarina String Quartet has quickly distinguished itself as one of North America’s most compelling young ensembles. The tightly-knit and community focused ensemble currently serves as the Graduate Resident String Quartet at The Juilliard School, where they explore all chamber music, from contemporary and canonized works to folk tunes.
Violinists Jeanel Liang and Jérôme Chiasson, violist Celia Morin, and cellist Maya Enstad will open and close their Oct. 7 concert with Romantic-era compositions, performing Franz Schubert's Quartettsatz in C minor and Robert Schumann's String Quartet No. 1 in A minor.
The middle of the program features Greek composer Konstantia Gourzi's Anájikon - The Angel in the Blue Garden. The work is the first in a series of compositions (each with a different instrumentation) that are dedicated to angels. According to the composer's notes, "Angels created as paintings or sculptures by artist friends inspired me to start this series of compositions in 2015. The music does not interpret the artwork but is close to it in terms of sound and creates a spiritual connection between the sculpture or painting and the music. Colour, form and sound are inseparable for me. Writing a composition with this 'common world' in the background is for me a challenge and a gift."
Katarina String Quartet was founded in 2022 at McGill University under the tutelage of André Roy. Since then, the Katarinas have worked extensively with members of the Juilliard, Alban Berg, Danel, Dover, and Pacifica Quartets, and have participated in prestigious programs such as IMS Prussia Cove and McGill International String Quartet Academy (MISQA). Also active in the European chamber music scene, the Katarina String Quartet is generously supported by the Nederlandse Strijkkwartet Academie and regularly performs in The Netherlands.
The quartet takes its name from luthier Katarina Guarneri, wife of violin-maker Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu. Scholars believe that she worked on her husband’s violins during the most productive years of his career. Inspired by Katarina, the KSQ celebrates the countless people and communities behind the canonized figureheads of classical music that contribute to the art we enjoy.
