Event Summary
'Call & Response' by Melinda Briggs
About the Exhibit:
This show stemmed from a conversation about how fine artists struggle to complete commissions. I am one of those artists. The conversation required me to reflect on aspects of commissions that are challenging. The thought trail started with me contemplating if it was my natural resistance to authority. As my thoughts unravel I realized that I struggle with commissions because I struggle to feel connected with the image that is given to me. So much of my process is about responding to nature and to the connection of being present in a place. To know a place so intimately that it becomes a companion. To be able to hear its call. It is out of that dialogue that begs me to paint the scene. It reminded me of the call and response rhythms in our lives. They happen in conversations, in music, in relationships, in liturgy at church, in poetry, but mostly for me in nature. This show was especially invigorating since I have already done a body of work around Garden of the Gods. It made me push and find angles that were unique and nuanced. To see the garden as more than an acquaintance but as a dear friend, an “Anam Cara.” Anam Cara, is the celtic word for soul friend and also the written body of work about Celtic wisdom from John O’Donohue that put into words the beauty of light. The first chapter of his book, ‘Light is Generous,’ provides reflections on the mystery and color that light adds to our world. From flying over the Garden of the Gods, to rock climbing, to picnicking, these ancient rock formations continue to unveil new wonders as the light falls on their presences.
About the Artist:
Melinda’s love of art started at a young age, inspired by her aunt who was an art therapist with the first nations people in Canada. Her affinity for art has deepened over the years, leading her to complete a Masters in Art Education from the University of Florida. Melinda paints impressionistic contemporary landscapes in oils and watercolor. She is invigorated by the fact much like exploring the outdoors, painting can never be truly conquered. There is always more to see and learn. She enjoys painting in an impressionistic style because much like her painting hero, Jill Carver, says, “The power of suggestion is a lot more interesting than the statement of certainty.” Her goal is to inspire more people to paint the great outdoors in Colorado Springs. One of the ways she is working on that is by teaching watercolor classes at Surface Gallery. She is inspired by her students and excited by what the next horizon will bring.
