The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) offers a distinctive Film & Screen Studies program within its Visual & Performing Arts Department, providing students with a strong foundation in the history, theory and practice of cinema. Through its Bachelor of Arts degree and minor, the program explores film as a multicultural and transnational art form while preparing students for careers in filmmaking, media production, graduate study and other creative industries. Students develop critical thinking and storytelling skills by examining the artistic, cultural and social impact of film from around the world.
The curriculum combines film analysis with hands-on creative experiences. Students study film history, theory, national cinemas, directors, genres and screenwriting while also gaining practical experience through production courses, internships, independent studies and collaborative creative projects. The interdisciplinary nature of the program allows students to complement their film studies with coursework in visual arts, theatre, music and other artistic disciplines, creating a well-rounded educational experience.
Beyond the classroom, UCCS encourages students to engage with Colorado's growing film community. Faculty mentor students through research, filmmaking and creative scholarship while fostering connections with regional film festivals, production companies and arts organizations. Students are encouraged to present scholarly work, screen their films, participate in internships and build professional networks that prepare them for careers in film, television, digital media and related fields.
Located in the heart of the Pikes Peak Region, UCCS plays an important role in developing the area's next generation of filmmakers, critics and creative professionals. By combining academic excellence, artistic exploration and community engagement, the Film & Screen Studies program contributes to the continued growth of Colorado Springs' vibrant film industry. Whether pursuing a career behind the camera, in film criticism, screenwriting or graduate study, students gain the knowledge, experience and connections needed to succeed in today's evolving media landscape.
