Film & Media Studies at Colorado College offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the power of moving images, digital media and visual storytelling. Rather than focusing solely on film production, the program examines how film, television, streaming media and emerging digital platforms shape culture, politics and society. Students explore cinema as both an artistic medium and a powerful form of communication while developing the analytical, creative and research skills needed for careers in media, education, the arts and related fields.
Through Colorado College's distinctive Block Plan, students immerse themselves in one course at a time, allowing for intensive study and hands-on learning. The Film & Media Studies curriculum spans film history, film theory, global cinema, documentary, animation, media studies and critical analysis while encouraging students to engage with a wide range of voices and storytelling traditions. Students also have opportunities to develop creative work in filmmaking, screenwriting and digital media production through project-based courses and independent research.
The program emphasizes experiential learning both inside and outside the classroom. Students collaborate with faculty on research and creative projects, participate in internships and engage with visiting filmmakers, scholars and artists through lectures, screenings and special events. Colorado College's strong connections to the local arts and film community provide additional opportunities to attend film festivals, participate in public screenings and build relationships with regional creative organizations. These experiences help students connect academic study with real-world applications while preparing them for graduate study and careers across the evolving media landscape.
Located in the heart of Colorado Springs, Colorado College plays an important role in cultivating thoughtful storytellers, filmmakers and media scholars. By combining critical inquiry, creative exploration and interdisciplinary learning, the Film & Media Studies program equips students to understand, create and engage with visual media while contributing to the continued growth of the Pikes Peak Region's vibrant film community.
