Artist Statement:

Several years ago I experienced multiple traumas when my family lost two young members to violent deaths, a close co-worker died, I was diagnosed with several life altering medical conditions, my income declined and I became the target of workplace bullying, all within a short period of time.

These experiences triggered depression, anxiety, and PTSD within me. Early childhood traumas were reactivated and, unable to cope effectively, I found myself at AspenPointe.

With help from a Tele- nurse, therapist, and art groups I started to put myself back together. Art therapy allowed me to look into my heart instead of my head and to transform my fear and pain.

Through watercolor, I felt colors bloom, change, and move through the water, and started to open myself up. Working with acrylics felt solid and permanent whenever I felt ungrounded and seemed to float away.

My photos are created entirely with an old cell phone and free photo editing app. When I'm layering, changing color or orientation, making unexpected connections and patterns I am reminded about how my life has changed and will never go back to the way it was.

Through my work, I realize that I'm capable of taking control of how I react to change and how changes affect me.
