Old Colorado City History Center

The Old Colorado City History Center is a non-profit museum funded solely by the generosity of friends and grants from philanthropic, education and historical foundations. The Center is operated by volunteer members of the Old Colorado City Historical Society. It is located at 1 South 24th St., Colorado Springs just across the street from Bancroft Park.

In 1859, the small settlement of El Dorado, at the eastern entrance to the pass through the mountains to the west was renamed Colorado City by the founders, Melancthon Beach, Rufus Cable, Anthony Bott and George Bute. Colorado City became the first permanent town in the Pikes Peak Region.

Early settlers included farmers, ranchers, freighters and outfitters for the people who were rushing to the western mine fields. By 1886, the Colorado Midland Railroad was one of the city's largest employers, with its headquarters, terminal and repair yards in Coloradi City.

The town soon became famous for its many saloons and brothels, however, the hardworking residents were more proud of their schools, Carnegie Public Library and churches. The good days were destined to fade for Colorado City and in 1917, after two votes; it was annexed by Colorado Springs.

The Old Colorado City Historical Society purchased the old First Baptist Church of Colorado City in 1992 as their future home. The Society had been organized over ten years earlier, in 1980, to keep memories of Colorado City alive and to encourage research, preserve photographs and celebrate the unique spirit of the city. Colorado City was in existence as a separate entity from 1859 to 1917 when it was incorporated into Colorado Springs. It is now considered the west side of town.
