Description:
Red Crags is a romantic 4 story, 8,000 square foot, 1880's Victorian mansion built by the founder of the town of Manitou Springs, Dr. William Bell. The house has original locally quarried, stone walls, 10 ft. ceilings, 8 wood burning fireplaces, hardwood floors throughout and lots of windows with great views. It is decorated in period antiques.
The building is situated on 1.5 acres of land, with herb and flower gardens, a running stream, pond and a large lawn area. A large outdoor Jacuzzi is available for guest use, giving you great views of Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, the Manitou valley and Colorado Springs. Lucky visitors will be able to catch a sight of the many resident deer which pass through the property.
The parlor has a large antique bar and mirror, which came out of a barber shop. Dessert is always set out here for guest enjoyment. An 1860's square grand piano, owned by the original owner's wife, Cara Bell, sits along one wall. A turn of the century bookcase houses a collection of David Winter Cottages, which Lynda & Howard, the current owners, have acquired. Guests can relax on 1920's red velvet Rococo couch and chairs in front of a fireplace while enjoying a glass of wine, sherry, or port which is served in the evening.
Adjacent to the parlor is the solarium. The room originally was open air, but is now enclosed. With windows on two sides, the views of Pikes Peak and the valley are spectacular, and appear to change throughout the day. Guests can sit and relax in rocking chairs or on a love seat. There are also café tables where guests can eat refreshments in the afternoon or breakfast in the morning. There is an adjoining porch which is a great place to lounge in the afternoon or evening, or eat breakfast in the morning. For guests that didn't bring their computers with them, a cyber café is available to check e-mail.
A step up and you are in the formal dining room. Coffee, tea, cocoa and cider are always available in this area. An Eastlake Cherrywood fireplace is a focal point in the room. A gourmet breakfast is served here unless guests request to eat in the solarium. For business travelers an early breakfast can be arranged. Special dietary needs can also be accommodated.
All eight of our guest rooms/suites have king size beds with feather mattresses and down comforters, fireplaces, private baths, telephone with data ports, and are cabled for TV. We have two suites with additional jetted tubs for two in the baths. A two bedroom suite that can accommodate 5 people, might be what you need.
The main attractions in the Pikes Peak region are all with 20-30 minutes of Red Crags. Other hiking and fishing areas are also within a 30 minute drive into the mountains. Cripple Creek, a historic mining town which now has legalized limited stakes gambling, is about 45 minutes away.
The municipal pool is just down the hill from Red Crags. Horseback riding is down the road. Within walking distance are seven natural mineral springs located in the various parks and streets throughout the city. The main downtown of Manitou Springs and the Garden of the Gods Park are also a short stroll away.
